April Fools Show 1967

Posted by Jerry Klein.

As noted, this was the April Fools Day edition of the weekly Saturday night folk music show hosted by Ed Sciaky from 8pm to midnight. April 1st also happens to be the day before Ed's birthday. Also on hand for this program were Mike Biel (doing the news) and Jerry Klein (engineer).

The intro set the tone for this April Fool's edition (2 minutes 37 seconds)

Ed plays a station promo, but it wasn't what he expected (2 minutes 4 seconds)

The news with Mike Biel, promoed by folk singer Joni Mitchell (36 seconds)

During Mike's newscast, the "ticker" sound in the background gradually got louder and louder. And an echo developed! Here's end of the newscast. (1 minute 35 seconds)

After one particular record (ends with applause), Mike Biel threw in some sound effects. But Ed zinged him for it. (40 seconds) Mike Biel comments: "As for that barnyard sound effect bit, I think Ed did it himself and blamed me for it, so the joke was on ME, not on him!!!" Jerry Klein replies: "I'm not so sure. That sounded like genuine irritation in Ed's voice toward the end. I remember a number of times he got rather steamed when he felt you went a bit to far!"

Ed thought he was in control of what songs he played. WRONGGGG!! (In this clip, the first and third of the three songs have been omitted. Only the surprise middle song is heard.) (1 minutes 12 seconds)

As Ed closes out the April Fools' Day edition of Broadside, someone has slipped him a VERY strange weather forecast. (2 minutes 20 seconds) Mike Biel comments: "That final weather is great, but although it sounds like he started reading it without thinking about what he was reading, I really think that he was just going along with the gag. Ed was too smart and too good a reader to not have seen what was written ahead of what he was saying. A good sport."
