Audio Clips from

Bill Stock's Closet

Clips provided by Bill Stock, except as noted. Posted by Jerry Klein.

Bill sent us a couple of tapes of stuff he found in the closet. Below are some excerpts, along with Bill's comments. Also among the tapes Bill Stock sent us were some Studio Schoolhouse productions for WFIL, which we've placed on their own separate page.

"THE MONSTER WITHIN" (3 minutes 41 seconds) - This was part of our "WRTI-FM Drama Workshop" series that aired at 3:00pm each Wednesday. The program was usually live and ran 1/2 hour. This program was atypical, as it runs 21 minutes and was taped. It aired on December 12, 1963. I also remember distinctly that it was taped on two different days in two different studios! Approximately the first half was done in Studio A and we finished up in Studio B. Why? I haven't a clue. I do remember endlessly seguing the same two music cues and we spent a fair amount of time setting levels and rehearsing sound because of the screams, laughs, etc. (One of the sound cues always makes me laugh when I hear it. Bill Reed says "...It's a terrible night" to be immediately followed by a thunderbolt blast from the ol' sound truck! Also, courtesy of either Steve or Joel, Susan is exceedingly enthusiastic.) The cast was:
  • HERB SMITH - Announcer/Producer/Director
  • BILL REED - Martin
  • SUSAN ROSENGARTEN - Helen
  • STEVE BERGER - Monster
  • BILL STOCK - Technical Director
  • STEVE GOLDSTEIN - Sound patterns
  • JOEL SEIDEL - Sound Patterns
  • BUD BIGGER - Host (Reading his script off Braille cards!)(Does anyone remember Bud? He had a killer deep voice and did lots of announcing stuff for us. He was also blind and had to transcribe all of his scripts onto braille cards. Nice guy and very funny. He's is the '64 staff photo in Jerry Klein's annex - 2nd row, 6th in from the right.)
Jerry Klein comments: Scripts tended to get recycled at WRTI. It turns out that Roger Wood produced and directed, and I starred in, a production of the same script in 1968. The later production was titled "The Horla," and also featured Florence Weiss and Ken Kubin. Here's an excerpt from "The Horla." (3 minutes 34 seconds) It is the same portion of the script as the above excerpt from "The Monster Within." You'll note that the two productions took significantly different approaches to the dramatic tone of the acting. Thanks to Roger Wood for send us the tape of this production, which is one that I did not have in my collection.

Bill Stock responds: The script we used for "The Monster Within" was titled "The Horla". We just didn't think we could get away with saying that on the air!!!

TEMPLE OWLS vs. LASALLE BASEBALL - From Spring 1963. Phil Jasner and Merrill Reese wrap up a 14-inning(!) baseball game remote. (A typical 'RTI telephonic baseball remote with the ol' OP-6 desperately trying to push some kind of signal through the chicken wire that connected the studios to the ball park.)(2 minutes 6 seconds)

"THE SHADOW OF THE NIGHT" BLOOPER - From 1963. Mary Ellen Redmile (now Cooper) used to voice this soft music & poetry show and I would announce. We used to tape it for playback late Saturday night. Here's a little blooper where the engineer (I forget who) opened the wrong mike. But, a good chance to hear Mary Ellen back then. (59 seconds)

EXCERPTS FROM BILL STOCK'S "LISTEN TO THIS" - Here are various snippets from my Saturday morning show "Listen To THIS, T-H-I-S, Thank Heavens It's Saturday" (Do I hold the record for the longest program title?) from April 30, 1966, 9:00-11:00am. The show originated from Studio C with our notoriously unreliable cart machine. [Jerry Klein comments: Take note of the musical selections. Talk about nostalgia!]

I read a promo for other shows on WRTI that day (1 minute 28 seconds) [Note: The other programs included "The Best of S.C.I.M."]
Engineering screw-up by yours truly, trying to play a Coast Guard PSA on the cart machine (40 seconds)
Bridge to next song with a promo for the show (52 seconds)
American Cancer Society PSA with cartoon characters (Mr. Magoo [played by Jim Backus], Bugs Bunny, Sylvester the Cat, and Porky Pig [all played by Mel Blanc]) (1 minute 32 seconds)
Promo for "The Crypt" with Mark Itkowitz ("Looking for the very best in music, madness and monsters?")(1 minute)
