However, the art of sound effects is alive and well in the movie business, where the sound effects people are called "Foley artists." Check the credits next time you watch a movie.
FYI, one of the attractions at Universal Studios theme park in Florida was (don't know if it's still there) a sound studio where the audience members could participate in creating the sound effects for an episode of "Murder She Wrote."
