What Mike is referring to is the fact that the followup process automatically quotes the preceeding message in its entirety. As is noted in the FAQ:
You can erase (cut) any or all of the previous message if you wish. It
is often helpful to quote part of the previous message, to help other readers understand what it is
you are responding to. However, it is also polite to delete as much of the previous message as you
can while still keeping enough to provide context, so that responses don't get too large.
