Morgan H. Thomas
Morgan Hunsicker Thomas was born in Perkiomen Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania on July 22, 1876. His father, John P. Thomas was a farmer. Morgan received his education in the public school system of Norristown and attended West Chester State College and Schissler's Business College in Norristown. A year or so before the turn of the century, he held a clerical position. Then in 1900 he was hired as a bookkeeper with a paper and twine wholesaler, Garrett Buchanan Company in Philadelphia. The firm was one of the largest of its kind in the United States. In 1907, he became Vice-President of the company and was elevated to the office of President in 1928. Morgan kept that position until 1960 when he became the company's Chairman of the Board until his death on August 16, 1961. During Thomas' term as President, the company added several branches. In addition, Thomas was Treasurer from 1926 to 1961 of the E. J. Spangler Company, a local maker of paper envelopes. Morgan Thomas was treasurer of the Philadelphia office of the Salvation Army from 1940 until his death. He was a director of Methodist Hospital, the Pennsylvania Sabbath School Association and the Germantown YMCA. He was a trustee and treasurer of Beaver College for 25 years. He received an honorary LL.D. degree from that institution in 1939 and an honorary L.H.D. degree from temple University on February 15, 1947. On December 9, 1947, Temple University rededicated Thatcher Hall as Thomas Hall in memory of his parents John and Mary Hunsicker Thomas. He was involved with the Masons, the Union League, Rotary and other civic groups. He was a member of the Tioga Presbyterian Church and was registered Republican. He loved playing golf. He was married in Norristown on October 16, 1901 to Aimee Klair and they had a son John Ellwood Thomas. He died in Meadowbrook, Pennsylvania.
