Dick Goldhaber What We Know
From Dick Goldhaber...I wanted to be the next Dick Clark, but I wasn't. The family pride was picked up by my daughter who made her bones at WGLS-FM at Glassboro State, where she did news, to her friendship 20 years ago with Richard Scott, who worked news for both WIP and KYW news, who used Danni as a South Jersey contributor.
At the moment Richard is a news director of TV17 in Philadelphia, and Danni still wants to be an audiologist.
Here is a story for you:
At its inception WRTI-FM was a majestic 10 watts, enough to allow it to be received in West Oak Lane.
I had the 4-5 shift on Friday night 40 years ago, and RCA Red Seal
records had made a deal with FM management to supply classical records for FM to play.
4-5 on Friday night was my shift, and I always played what I had stolen from WIP's previous top 20, since we never had all of the records.
I said to my mother "please listen and then call to protest the change".
My mother, who passed away shortly after, forgot.
I have forgiven her.
You either have or will realize that I have a rather irreverent view on most things.
I don't recall ever having a conversation with John Roberts during my stay at WRTI. Gary Geers, who is missing from your "who's who" was my teacher for Radio 44. Gary was the in-house announcer for KYW-TV at that time, and the host of their early morning Farm Show.
I knew Chuck Sherman from Central High School, but I don't remember him from Temple. I believe he went on to become the "mahatma" of Wayne State University, but I have had no contact with him for 40 years.
Steve Cohen (AKA Steve Raymond) married Gloria Teblum (AKA Gloria Towne) and since I dated Gloria both before and after her marriage, I know that she is married to someone else at this time. Barbara Kaufman was closer to her than I was in spite of the fact that I dated Gloria within the last 20 years.
Betcha you didn't think that you would find fuel for an afternoon soap at WRTI.
20 years ago a friend and 15 year customer of mine asked me if I'd like to come to work for him.
He had just begun the third video store in Philadelphia. I thought
about it, went home and asked my wife, and in July of 1978 I went to work as a salesman for Movies Unlimited.
20 years later MU remains the oldest video store in the United States in continuous operation at the same address, 6736 Castor Avenue in
Philadelphia.
20 years later I am a video buyer for their mail order division, and I run their Internet website.
And while I'd still like to be a famous DJ, I wouldn't drive the car I drive, or have the bank account I have if Charlie O'Donnell had liked my audition 40 years ago.
