H. Paul Jeffers

His Story

>

Think back about 33 years ago. The Vietnam War was in full swing and a record was released by U.S. Senator Everett Dirksen entitled, "Gallant Men." What you may not know is the brains behind this project was Temple Alumni (and former WRTIer) H. Paul Jeffers.

The following is an e-mail from H. Paul Jeffers to Gerry Wilkinson (6/16/99)

Sure you can list my e-mail address. I'll check out the web site. Here's another WRTI alum (you may have it already): Gail Hebert. She was Gail Eveland back then and was music director when I was news director and faculty assistant of RTI (1952-56). We're the group who put the FM station of the air. At that time we had to climb to the top of whatever hall it was (memory fails) to turn the transmitter on and off. Halycon days! I've kept in touch with John Roberts over the years and last saw him when he and Jackie Steck were honored at the Museum of Broadcasting.

...Since my WRTI days I got an MA in journalism at the University of Iowa, spent a couple of years in the army and 33 years in broadcast news in Boston and New York (I'm the only person to have been news director of both of NYC's all-news radio stations), and did a little college teaching along the way (Boston U., Syracuse U., NYU, City College of New York, and Cal State Long Beach) I'm now a fulltime author with 40 books published so far, fiction (detective novels) and non-fiction (history and biography, the latest one President Grover Cleveland, to be published in 2000); and true crime history, the latest a collection of ax murders, also due out in 2000.
