Their Story
The following is an e-mail from Alan Labovitz to Gerry Wilkinson
I am that Alan Labovitz. I was at Temple from 1958 to 1961 and at one point I was the program director of WRTI-AM. My Wife, then Judy Steinberg, was
also active at 'RTI. She was the program director of the FM station at that time. She graduated in 1962.
The following is another e-mail from Alan Labovitz to Gerry Wilkinson Alan & Judith Labovitz
Please say hello for us to any of the folks who are around Philadelphia. We've been in Michigan since 1964. It's possible we might be able to attend a reunion in May. Please keep us in mind. Also, let folks know our email.
After graduation, I went to work for several small radio stations in Atlantic City, Easton, Pa. and State College. Judy was not able to work in radio since stations wouldn't hire a married couple and would have fired me if she worked for the competition. Actually, small town radio was pretty dreadful.
We decided that I would go to graduate school in order to teach. I attended Boston University and Michigan State University where I earned a Ph.D. I taught college level broadcasting for about ten years. We attended several conventions over the years and saw Mr. Seibel, Mr. Roberts and Dr. Dusenbury at some of these. We also kept in touch with Chuck Sherman for a while. The last we heard was quite some time ago that he had left teaching and was working in commercial broadcasting somewhere in Wisconsin.
Judy went to work for the state of Michigan and became an administrator in children's services and I later went to work for the state as a research analyst in Juvenile Justice. We both retired last June and have been living a busy life of leisure. We have two married sons and a three-and-a-half year old grandson in town and just got a new Bassett puppy. By the way, we live in Lansing, MI.
I briefly looked at the web pages for WRTI and they look great. Once again, thanks for the update. Please keep in touch.
Additional Information:
Judie now never uses the nickname and prefers to be called "Judith." Alan doesn't remember which semester he was Program Director for the AM station. He says, "It was for one semester and was either in 1960 or '61."
Alan sent us some more info...I was in a hurry to graduate since I had been in the army for three years prior to college and was getting married December, 1961. My wife graduated in '62.
I began graduate school at Boston University in 1963 and moved to MSU the next year. I received a Ph.D. in TV and Radio and Speech in 1970. I was teaching broadcasting at Western Mich. in 1976. As I mentioned, I ran into John Roberts and Bill Seibel at conferneces during the time I was teaching. I also saw Chuck Sherman periodically. I believe that George Ingram, who is a VP at Temple was also active to some degree at WRTI while we were there.
He's on the extreme right and Judie is at the piano.
