Dear Jerry:
Thank you for your very thoughtful note.
Minoans built over Bronze age
cities, Periclean over Mycenian,
Roman over Hellenistic, Byzantium over Roman, etc. It's
really sad
but can also be the only practical way to save an institution and
mission.
Like you, I love the old memories, but I try to focus on learning, the spirit,
the ideas, the
mission.
As for Thomas Hall, it was the site of many spirited
intellectual and learning
sessions. I love it. But I am devoted to
future generations of students more than I am to
my memories.
We've saved the Lion of Juda and similar artifacts from the old
Klein
Law Library (fire in 1972, Sanford White), memorabilia from
Temple Stadium, and likewise
from Thomas. Someday, we can gather all
in one garden with likenesses of the original
edifices and have our
descendants reminisce (and exaggerate) about our contributions within
those hallowed halls.
Thanks, again, for caring enough to write fresh after seeing the
Elgin Marbles "saved" from
Greek pollution.
