All I can say is WOW!!! That is one hell of an article. I'm printing
it out now and will give out copies in my audio production class
tommorrow.
There are a couple of minor mistakes--Gene Shay was on WHAT-FM, not AM,
and isn't it "Inside Radio" not "Insider Radio"?--and the writer missed
the influence of the Pacifica Stations WBAI, KPFA, and KPFK for REALLY
starting free-form radio. I know that was where Ed first heard that
type of radio. He used to come up to our 11th floor dorm room in 1965
and 66 where we could hear WBAI after WDVR signed off at midnight. And
I also brought back some tapes I had made of WBAI during the summer.
And that led directly to an experimental underground edition of
Broadside in 1967 which I have on tape. That was before Tom Donohue--but
these were all non-commercial radio stations, so perhaps they don't
count. Ha Ha.
And by the way, I can just hear Ed saying "That's stupid" about the kid
mowing his lawn
right after the rain! It is so typical!
