I usually got my steak sandwiches from Grace's Luncheonette a few doors North of the Nest--you know, Filthy Freddie's and Greasy Gracie's. Freddie would sell you a 6 inch half-sandwich for 25 cents, but at the Owl's Nest they only sold them as a double sandwich for 50 cents. And Freddie stayed open till midnight, while the Owls Nest closed at 11.
Remember when Gracie became pregnant and couldn't fit behind
the counter! Boy, THERE was a strange couple! Freddie was planning on selling the place in a
year or two and retire to Florida on a yacht.
And Bill, I WAS there. I was holding up the
cue-cards to tell you which field reporter to go to next. It was my first big broadcast!
