What I was getting at was that the key switch should be thrown to
program before turning up the pot. If you listen to Jerry Klein's The
World Today you will hear a spot of feedback near the end of the
opening. The speaker muting relay was a touch slow. Also on his
Broadside newscast there's a big CLUNK when he turns his mic on.
Soooooo.... the order MUST be: 1) vertical selector switch down to
local, 2) pot 4 key switch to program, 3) pot up. You were definately
right about not turning the pot 4 key on first.
Could have another trivia question--what is the UP position for that
vertical switch. It was a three position switch, after all. (But we
never used it in the up position because it was not connected to
anything in our set-up, but it did have a use.)

Ah know who YOU like!

Actually you slid it to the right for 78. I remember this because you
could switch it from 33 to 78 while it was turning, but not the other
way.

and 45.

Well, actually you did turn the knob to the left for 45, but since the
turntable gear switch was set to 78, if you turned the knob to the right
you got 78. So if you were set at 45 but needed instead to go to 33 you
had to stop the turntable, change the lever from 78 to 33, and restart
the table with the know in the other direction. Remember, the 45 speed
was developed after these turntables were built!

> But, I didn't have to worry about it, because it was written on the
turntable.

Right. You'ld either have dead air while you looked at the damn labels
or else we'd have a record playing at 19 RPM. Actually, there were no
written instructions that explained which way to slide the turntable
edge switch to get 45. If you had it at 33 when you turned the round
knob to the left, you would get 33/78s of 45, which is 19. But the only
people who had to worry about that were the AM kids, and those of us
doing dramatic production in A. Of course ALL the R-TV students had to
know it because those were the studios where classes were done the most
often. In B and C the tables were actualy marked for the three speeds,
and you could change them on air. Whether you wanted to or not!
